Tailored mobile applications

About Airpoint

Airpoint was formed in 2003, developing products for the emerging data mobilisation market. Our first customers required high levels of data security, so we selected the recently introduced BlackBerry® platform with it’s inherently secure operating system. Early industry attempts were focussed on mobilising customer’s existing desktop applications onto handheld devices. As our experience grew, it became apparent that we needed to move beyond just mobilising applications, to understanding the broader workflows employed by our customers in order to tailor our applications for the mobile environment. We focused on developing a partnership approach with clients, working with them from project inception to understand the business processes involved. This allowed us to move to a process-based design approach of our applications that better matched the required outcomes of a task rather than simply replicating back-office functionality. Combine this with intelligent screen design to minimise the number of key strokes in a given operation and you have a highly usable mobile solution with greater buy-in from users.

Our first applications were bespoke developments using our rapid prototyping methodology. In this methodology we interpret the project’s requirements to produce a stand-alone prototype application. This gives the end user the opportunity to contribute to application development at the start of the design process; critical in obtaining user buy-in where business processes are transforming. From feedback on how the prototype looks and feels, we then refine the application before going to final production. When we started to integrate this methodology with our process based approach, we were able to produce highly complex, very secure applications for the police; being involved early in the business transformation process with a team of highly skilled business analysts.

We subsequently developed a suite of policing products over several years before consolidating up to seven different applications into a single product called Mobile Policing Suite 2. MPS2 incorporates an optimised process-based approach resulting in federated searches across multiple local and national databases. It has proven to be very successful in terms of return on investment, and is used as a case study by BlackBerry®.

Airpoint continues to develop for the policing market, but has a range of products in the following industries on the BlackBerry® platform:
Health & Medical
Policing
Scientific & Technical
Facilities Management
Construction
Financial Services
Private Security
Warehousing
Event Management

We have developed bespoke mobile solutions for the private and public sectors. We also have customiseable off-the-shelf products in the following areas:
  • Electronic forms for paperless data capture, including appointments management, and integration with satellite navigation
  • Tracking solutions for lone worker protection and monitoring, event management and security

Our focus, as always, remains on delivering highly usable solutions to our customers by maximising the outputs from the BlackBerry® network. We actively encourage development partnerships and we would welcome the opportunity to share our market leading mobile technology with you.
